Irina van Aalst joined the Urban Geography group at the Utrecht University in 1999 having previously worked as senior researcher at the Institute for Housing and Mobility Studies, Delft University of Technology. She completed her PhD in Human Geography and Urban Planning in Utrecht (1997). Irina's research can be positioned at the intersection of urban, cultural and economic geography. She publishes on urban dynamics and culture, public spaces, youth, creative industries, surveillance and nightlife, and the city of New York.
